Herein we show the synthesisand characterization of the secondknown Ce_2@C_(80)isomer. A ~(13)CNMRspectroscopic study revealed that thestructure of the second isomer has D_(5h)symmetry. Paramagnetic NMR spectralanalysis and theoretical calculation dis-play that the encapsulated Ce atomscirculate two-dimensionally along aband of ten contiguous hexagons insidea D_(5h)-C_(80)cage, which is in sharp con- tract to the three-dimensional circula-tion of two Ce atoms in an I_h-C_(80)cage.The electronic properties were re-vealed by means of electrochemicalmeasurements. The D_(5h)isomer ofCe_2@C_(80)has a much smaller HOMO-LUMO gap than cluster fullerenes(M_3N@C_(80), M = Sc, Tm, and Lu) withthe same D_(5h)-C_(80)cages. The chemicalreactivity was investigated by using di-silirane as a chemical probe. The highthermal reactivity toward 1,1,2,2-tetra-mesityl-1,2-disilirane is consistent withthe trends of the redox potentials andthe lower LUMO level of the D_(5h)isomer of Ce)2@C_(80)compared with thatof C_(60).
