Catching the radical: Characterization of an oxidized nonsymmetric NiII-Sala-len complex 2~+ has demonstrated that the ligand radical is localized on the more electron-rich aminophenolate, and can be described as a Class II intervalence complex. This is in con-trast to the oxidized symmetric salen analogue 1~+, in which the radical is fully delocalized across the ligand framework, a Class III species.
