Complex, well-defined structures found throughout natureare continuously intriguing and inspiring biologists, bio-chemists and chemists. A recurring theme in most biologicalmacromolecules is the presence of controlled and well-de-fined intramolecular folding. Consequently, there has beenmuch effort in recent years to prepare synthetic analoguesof natural folding molecules to better understand the mech-anism of natural folding, which is of vital importance tomost protein, polysaccharide and nucleic acid structure—function relationships.1121 The term foldamer[3'41 was recentlyredefined by Gellman as "unnatural oligomers that displayconformational propensities akin to those of proteins andnucleic acids".151
