摘要

Despite its low cost and abundance, tall oil has only recently been considered as a potential fuel source. Crude tall oil is a by-product of the kraft process, i.e., production of pulp from wood via chemical pulping. Under the strong alkaline conditions in the kraft process, lipophilic components of wood are converted into soaps; the soaps are then separated from the recovered black liquor in the pulping process. The skimming of insoluble soaps from the surface, and acidification of skimmed soaps to their respective fatty acids and resin acids, results in a product called tall oil. Tall oil can potentially be converted into biodiesel.
