Will the current economic environment, healthcare reform, and potential federal and state budget cuts create the 'perfect storm' for insurance coverage of breast reduction surgeries?
Having been a nurse in plastic surgery for the past 18 years, I, like many of you, have witnessed a change in our insurance coverage for procedures that are performed by plastic surgeons. Four years ago my daughter, who was 17 years old, applied to gain approval for a reduction mammaplasty. She was denied upon the basis that she was not old enough and did not have enough estimated breast tissue to remove. I reassured her that this was an appropriate decision and she should probably wait in case she decides to change her mind, loses weight, or wants to consider this surgery after having children.
