The preparation and properties of fourteen novel paramagnetic [Ni_x~II] aggregates bridged by pivalate pyrazoliolate and in most cases hydroxide are reported A rich structural diversity has been achieved by changing the nature of the alkali of the base used durig the synthesis leading to the nuclearities [Ni_4~IINa_4~I] (2,3,4),[Ni~II_5-Na_4~I] (5,6,7) [Ni_5~IILi_6~I] (8) [Ni_8~IIM_2~I] (m=k(9,10),Rb(11,12) Cs(13,14) and [Ni_8~II] (15) All compounds have been characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction however full crystallographic details are given only for the representative molecules [Ni_4Na_4-(fpo)_4(piv)_8] (2) [Ni_5Na_4(OH)_2-(mpo)_4(piv)_8(Hpiv)_2(MeCN)_2](5),[nI_5Li_6(OH)_2(fpo)_2(piv)-12(Hpiv)_4] [Ni_8K_2(OH)_4(ppo)_4(piv)_10(Hppo)_2-(Hpiv)_2(MeCN)_2] (9) [Ni_8Rb_2(OH)_4-(ppo)_4(piv)_10 (Hppo)_2(Hpiv)-2(MeCN)_2](11) [Ni_8Cs_2(OH)_4(ppo)_4(piv)_10 (Hppo)_2-(Hpiv)_2(PhCH_2CO_2)_10 (Hmpo)_8] (15) Variable-temperature bulk magnetisation measurement have been performed for each type of complex The [Ni_4~IINa_4~I] clusters show interamolecular antiferromagnetic coupling and a spin ground state of s=0 Complexes of the type [N_5~IINa_4~I] also display antiferromagnetic superexchange leading to an S=1 spin ground state The molecule with nuclearity [Ni_5~IILi_6~I] in contrast wxhibits ferromagetic interactins resulting in the presence of low energy states with high multiplicity and a spinground state S>1 The [Ni_8~IIM_2~I] and [Ni_8~II] clusters is ratonalised in terms of the nature of the Ni-O-Ni angles within the core.
