During the most recent Texas legislative session, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) compromised with legislators and other groups to help pass House Bill 414, which ended the nearly decade-long battle over who may legally perform some aspects of equine dentistry, including tooth-floating. This legislation will come into full effect on Sept. 1, 2012. House Bill 414 amended the Texas Occupations Code to prohibit a person from performing equine dentistry unless the person is a veterinarian or a licensed Equine Dental Provider (EDP) under the supervision of a veterinarian who has an established veterinary-client-patient relationship with the owner or caretaker of the animal.
