A robust understanding of the physical processes that occur during earthquake rupture is of key importance for improving our ability to reliably predict earthquake ground motions from future damaging events. The past few decades have seen intensive research in this field and scientists became aware of the remarkable complexity of earthquake rupture, which has been shown to be highly variable at all scales and to span a wide dynamic range, from slow to supershear earthquakes.
