Sleep abnormalities are common in patients with suicidal behaviour [1-3]. Sleep complaints such as insomnia, hypersomnia, nightmares, and sleep panic attacks are frequent in suicidal adolescents and adults . For example, results from a school-based survey in the USA indicate that whereas insomnia and hypersomnia independently increase risk for suicidal ideation in adolescents, the presence of both insomnia and hypersomnia incurs further increased suicidal risk in this population . In another study, a significant and temporal relationship between sleep problems and completed suicide has been observed . Sleep studies have reported various polysomno-graphic findings in suicidal patients with depression, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia. For example, in a retrospective study of the electroencepha-lographic sleep of depressed patients with and without a history of suicide attempts, suicide attemp-ters had longer sleep latency, lower sleep efficiency, and fewer late-night delta wave counts than normal controls . Non-attempters, compared to attemp-ters, had less rapid eye movement (REM) time and activity in period 2, but more delta wave counts in non-REM period 4. Considerable evidence supports a strong link between sleep disturbances and suicidality but the pathway remains to be established.
