A brief review on the distribution, incidence and severity of cotton diseases since 1983 in Australia is reported. Topics covered include farm management practices, seedling diseases, Verticillium wilt (V. dahliae), bacterial blight [Xanthomonas malvacearum], black root rot [Thielaviopsis basicola], Phytophthora boll rot [P. nicotianae var. parasitica], Alternaria leaf spot [A. macrospora] and Fusarium wilt [F. oxysporum]. Methods for the control of cotton diseases are discussed and special attention is given to quarantine measures for the control of the spread of tropical rust, caused by Phakospora gossypii.
