THE effects of statins on plasma lipids are well established. They inhibit the action of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. This leads to increased clearance of LDL-cholesterol from the plasma, with a subsequent reduction in both LDL and total cholesterol. It has been shown that treatment with statins can slow or halt the progression of atherosclerosis. However, it has not been convincingly shown, up to the present, that statin therapy can cause a regression of atheroma volume.
