Complementary medicines and cognition: four for thought

Most people recognise a change in memory and ability to recall information as they get older. According to one study of 280 people, there was a self-perceived threefold increase in memory loss from the decade of the 30s to the decade of the 40s. For some, this obvious decline is taken as a natural part of ageing whereas, for others, it starts the search for better health and ways to forestall further memory loss and improve current functioning. There are a number of complementary medicines that are proven,or have the potential, to make a significant impact on memory and cognitive function. While herbal medicines such as Ginkgo biloba and brahmi (Bacopa monniera) are fairly well known to pharmacists in this regard, there are many others worthy of consideration.This article focuses on several food and nutritional substancesgaining attention in the research community for their possible effects on memory: huper-zine A, acetyl-L-carnitine,phosphatidylser-ine and blueberries.
