DOCTORS should begin treating patients with high cholesterol much more aggressively or face serious health and social consequences within 15 years, was the main conclusion of a recent commentary by the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation.As the main basis for its discussion on the current state of treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the journal cited in its commentary a report by a European think tank, the Stockholm Network titled Cholesterol: the Public Policy Implications of Not Doing Enough. Strong similarities between the European and Australian health environments means the report holds serious implications for the current state of play in Australia, said Professor Leon Simons, St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.
