The National Prescribing Service (NPS) recently collaborated with industry to hold a Quality Use of Medicine (QUM) workshop to examine issues raised by patients, health professionals and industry in ensuring safe and effective use of medicines in National Health Priority areas. To facilitate practical thinking, the focus was on type 2 diabetes. It was important to acknowledge the prevalence of complementary therapies used by patients with type 2 diabetes and, therefore, the need to better understand the issues surrounding concomitant use of complementary and prescribed medicines in this condition. This is particularly relevant as patients often do not disclose complementary medicine use.
