As operators look to minimise costs, the deployment of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for pipeline monitoring, well site monitoring and control, compressor monitoring and site surveillance is becoming increasingly important. In order to be effective, these systems need to be connected back to the company's Operations Centre so they can quickly act on any unexpected events and minimise disruption to production and delivery. Unfortunately the fixed and mobile telephone networks don't go very far into the remote areas where the assets are deployed, so connection can be difficult and costly and bandwidth can be restrictive.
