South Texas has a more diverse wildlife population, concentrated in a fairly compact region, than some of the vast and famous natural resource areas of the United States. Within just 141 square miles of South Texas live 1,100 plant and 700 vertebratespecies. Compare that density and diversity to: Everglades National Park - 2,354 square miles support 1,033 plant and 633 vertebrate species. Yellowstone National Park - 3,000 square miles support 1,155 plant and 328 vertebrate species. Hawaii Volcano National Park - 328 square miles support 328 plant and 66 vertebrate species.
