摘要

The "Maximum Yield Through Inputs" study of the United Soybean Board (USB)-funded Kitchen Sink Project was developed to shed light on which elements of an intensive soybean production system could help increase yields and economic returns to soybeangrowers in the Midwest and South. Basically, researchers decided to see what would happen if they threw "everything but the kitchen sink" at the crop and compared it to plots raised without the additional inputs. On the surface level, the three-year, six-state, research-plot study showed a 6.9-bu./acre difference in its most extreme comparison (see charts), between control plots planted on 30-in. rows and the high-input system on narrow-row soybeans (20 in. or less). However, because of its intricate design, the Kitchen Sink Project allows investigators to dig deeper into the variables that impact yield and economics. Some of the results surprised the researchers - and they're likely to surprise growers, too.
