Voluntary efforts prove that innovative programs can cut P loss.This vertical manure injection rig from VTI, Washington, Iowa, uses a large fluted coulter to cut through crop residue and open a narrow slot in the soil for manure placement. Closing wheels seal the slot, leaving residue in place. The tool, invented byIowa no-tiller Phil Reed, incorporates manure with minimal soil disturbance, making it ideal for no-till and reduced-tillage systems.
