Physical platinum and futures, forwards, and options, the underlying value of which is derived from platinum, are traded in the London over the counter market, the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), operated by CME Group, and the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (Tocom). Platinum also is traded at exchanges in Shanghai, Mumbai, Moscow, and South Africa, but these are much smaller markets. Over the counter markets and exchanges provide liquidity to the platinum market, making it easier for buyers and sellers to be matched. Measuring trading volumes and open interest at exchanges helps to illustrate the level of activity in the market and help to explain price trends.
