Palladium fabrication demand rose to a record 8.80 million ounces in 2013, up from 8.54 million ounces in 2012. This was the fourth consecutive year of growth in palladium fabrication demand. Healthy demand from the auto-catalyst sector was the primary driver of growth during 2013. Demand from the auto sector rose by 4.2% in 2013 to reach 5.69 million ounces.Demand from electronics and chemical and refining catalysts also grew during 2013, but at a relatively slower pace compared to demand from the auto sector. Demand from electronics rose by 3.2% to 1.23 million ounces and demand from the chemical and petroleum refining catalysts rose around 2% to 480,000 ounces.
