Most citrus growers own a wide array of grove equipment and they or their employees do everything from mowing to spraying. But when it comes to hedging and topping their trees, virtually all go outside their own grove or company. "They opt, and I think wisely so, to use me or somebody else to do their work," said Charlie Russ, owner of Orange Service Co. Russ said hedging and topping requires sophisticated operators and maintenance, as well as some engineering expertise, to keep the big pruning machines running properly.
