Weeds are a lot like the common cold - they don't get much respect but everybody gets them and spends a lot of money fighting them. Agricultural economists estimate the average Florida citrus grower spends 23 percent of his production budget - or about 191 dollar an acre - to control weeds every year. The grower spends only slightly more (25 percent of the budget) to control or prevent all other pests and diseases such as insects, mites and foot rot. According to one estimate from the University of Florida's Insitute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), Florida citrus growers spend 142.7 million dollar a year for weed control and 163 million dollar for other pest controls.
