When planting a grove on a flatwoods soil, what factor must the grower consider that is not important to other citrus growers of the world? The answer is, "What is the best water management system to maintain the maximum rooting volume pet tree?" By water management system, I mean not only handling the water you see but also the watei you don't see - the water in the rooting area.This can be done by one of a number of bedding systems. For a complete description of bedding systems, see "Systems and Costs of Developing Poorly Drained Soils" by Kenneth A. Harris, Citrus Industry, March 1964, pages 5-11. This article details the design, costs, advantages and disadvantages of the seven systems described. My opinion of what he gives as advantages and disadvantages will be given in this column.
