In 2000 the political and economic realities of Mexico were stood on their head as it became obvious that the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was about to be unseated for the first time since it had come to power in 1910. The campaign of Vicente Fox was all about business and the economy and the need for Mexico to shed its corrupt past. Fox was a business executive with virtu-ally no experience in politics and it showed. It was a rough term but his party (PAN) showed well enough to win the presidency over a challenge from the far left in 2006 when Felipe Calderon assumed the post. For 10 years the PRI faded from view.
