GRSpring & Stamping Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., is both a Tier 1 and Tier 2 stamping automotive supplier for Nissan and Toyota, with about 235 employees and sales of 40 million dollars. The company devised its own in-die welding process that has enabled it to eliminate some secondary operations, increase throughput and speed, and reduce material handling, according to Dan Armock, engineering manager, who is responsible for tooling, prototyping, and engineering. "It started back in the early '90s- '92, '93. We had a part that we wanted to produce by combining a couple of processes into the die, staking a self-clinched stud and stamping. So we applied in-die staking [selfclinching]-staking a bolt or a sleeve inside the stamping die-that eliminated the secondary operation. There's no welding involved, it's a press-fit type of thing. We had a lot of success with that"
