The buzz of the welding arc; the ka-chunk of a punch press; the whir of manufacturing in motion--noise to most, but not to Mary Vermeer-An-dringa. When all floor processes are in synch, she hears a symphony. For her, this is lean manufacturing at its finest. Andringa has a degree in music education, an unusual background for a chief industry executive. But as co-CEO of Vermeer Corp., an equipment manufacturer 2,000 employees strong, she has made a significant footprint in the family business, an operation that's starkly different from where it was just a decade ago. And as counterintuitive as it may seem, Andringa's music education helped the company get there. From a certain perspective, in fact, the fundamentals of music and lean share remarkable similarities.
