Serving a niche market is good business for steel fabricators, but it doesn't guarantee a healthy future like diversification. Chicago Metal Rolled Products Co. (CMRP) realizes the former and is working on the latter. CMRP started mainly focusing on curving steel after the company struck out on its own in 1984, splitting from what is now known as Chicago Metal Fabricators. That decision came more than 60 years after George F. Half, grandfather of CMRP President George Wendt, bought Chicago Metal Manufacturing Co., a company that began operation in 1908. In the days since the company tackled curving metal head-on, it has seen the different market segments it serves go up and down--some business disappears, but other opportunities arise. CMRP added pipe bending expertise with the purchase of Wallace Tube Bending of Bryson City, N.C., in 1994, and expanded the company's business west with a new, full-service facility in Kansas City, Mo., which opened in late 2004- CMRP employs 65 people and 60 pieces of metal bending equipment, many of which were developed in-house.
