This article reports on the threat to the Amazon rain forest arising from soyabean cultivation. It is argued that because of soya, the Amazon basin is facing possibly its most serious threat ever. The Brazilian 'soya boom' is seen to have been artificially sustained by massive state and foreign subsidies. In the future, even faster expansion is planned: the government has set a target of 100 Mt by the 2002/3 harvest. This means that the land under soya cultivation will have to increase from the current 13 M ha to 39 M ha.
