My journey towards the breeding of-year round blooming camellias began when I read an article in the 2001 ACS Yearbook by Professor Gao Jiyin. This article introduced me to a very rare camellia species in China known as Camellia azalea. Professor Gaoexplained in his article that this new species was very unique in that it bloomed almost year round. Reading that article excited my soul and captured my imagination. Those of us that love camellias anxiously await the beginning of camellia blooming season and dread when the flowering season is over. The thought of being able to enjoy camellia flowers all year was beyond my wildest dreams at that time.
