In utilizing the Standardised (Thoroughbred) athlete as the subject, numerous miles are traveled over a resilient surface during the course of training and racing. This constant concussive trauma during exercise predisposes this equine athlete to inflammatory processes and pain within the anatomical structures of the foot. This continued concussive trauma to the foot creates a developmental or subacute form of laminitis. The resultant pain from the traumatic activity causes a release of catecholamines, which in turn act on alpha-receptors, within the vasculature of the foot, resulting in a vasoconstriction of the vasculature. This vasoconstriction and resultant decreased capillary perfusion could produce a coagulopathy within the dermal vasculaturepredisposing these structures to a laminitic condition. Any alleviation of pain and concurrent reduction of inflammation within these tissues would reduce the risk of this condition from becoming an acute entity.
