Synopsis The use of computers as analysis and design tools has revolutionized the practice of geotechnical engineering in the last two decades. Numerical continuum methods are now common in many practices and provide previously undreamed of power and flexibility in analysing complex geotechnical problems and designing elegant cost-effective solutions. It is, however in another field, that of data handling, that computers are poised to impact on the profession perhaps even more profoundly A powerful movement toward the generation, transfer management and interpretation of geotechnical data in electronic format is gaining momentum internationally This paper gives a broad overview of that movement.
