Objective: To evaluate the compatibility and stability of ondansetron and methylprednisolone when prepared in combination in the same infusion bag, with a view to preparing large quantities of this drug combination in advance and storing it until needed for patient administration.Methods; Combined solutions were prepared with concentrations of 0.16 mg/mL ondansetron and 2.4 mg/mL of methylprednisolone in 2 different solutions: 5 % glucose and 0.9% sodium chloride. Two types of bags (MacoPharma polyolefins and Fresenius Freeflex polypropylene) were used to determine the impact of bag material on the stability and compatibility of the mixture. The bags were stored at room temperature (22degC + 3degC, with or without protection from light) or at 4degC +- 2degC. The concentration of each active ingredient was evaluated with a high-performance liquid chromatography method, and physical compatibility was assessed by visual inspection of the bags.Results: The combination of ondansetron and methylprednisolone prepared in the same infusion bag at the concentrations tested in this study could be stored for 2 days at room temperature or 4 days at 4degC when prepared in 5% glucose and for 3 days at room temperature or 4 days at 4degC when prepared in 0.9% sodium chloride. The nature of the bag material (polypropylene or polyolefins) and exposure to light did not affect stability.Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the bags containing a mixture of ondansetron and methylprednisolone can be stored for a maximum of 4 days at 4degC (refrigerated) and a maximum of 2 days at room temperature. These data confirm that it is possible to prepare bags in advance and to keep them ready for use upon prescribing by the medical team, without the delay imposed by preparation.
