Norway's J.L. Tiedemanns Tobaksfabrik is aware children work on African plantations supplying the company with tobacco, but the firm says there's little it can do to stamp out child labour. According to Afterposten Interactive, Tiedemanns gets 20 to30 per cent of its raw material from Zimbabwe and Malawi where the use of child labour is widespread. Information chief Jan Robert Kvam said, "let's get this straight, in principle we oppose child labour. Yes, we know children probably work on local farms (but) we distance ourselves from child labour and try to operate a form of quality control with our suppliers. We are aware the problem exists in certain markets," he added. Even though Skandinavisk Tobakskompagni, a major shareholder in Tiedemanns, plays a dominant role in Denmark and Norway, Kvam maintains the company yields little international influence. The firm buys tobacco via brokers at auctions, and is a small customer in the worldwide market.
