EC and a decays of Am-235 have been studied using a gas-jet coupled on-line isotope separator. Excited states in Pu-235 have been established for the first time by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy following the EC decay of Am-235. The deduced log ft value suggests that the ground state of Am-235 should have the pi5/2(-)[523] configuration. The alpha-gamma coincidence result has revealed that the pi5/2-[523] state in Np-231 populated by the favored a transition of Am-235 is located at < 15 keV, which allows us to precisely determine the Q(alpha) value of Am-235.
