Introduction: The civil commitment of the mentally ill person is a legal process that is primarily concerned with confinement and treatment of people who are disabled by a mental disorder. Although the purpose and objective of confinement under the mental health legislation may be remedial and therapeutic, legislation also appears to have been derived as a result of concern for protection of the community.
