Scholarship on the Australian heroin drought is constrained by the varied limitations of data and data sources that are a feature of much research on illicit drugs. Nevertheless, the documented effects of the heroin drought on many routinely collected data were reasonably well-ascertained and these effects were mirrored in other data obtained through reports from people who used the drug and associated professionals. Profound reductions in the rates of heroin related mortality and morbidity were observed in accord with reductions in other proxies of market parameters such as the purity of heroin seizures (Degenhardt, Day, etal., 2005).
