In our introductory article (IL153 p.108) we mentioned in passing the difficulty in defining exactly which businesses counted as 'the cement industry'. The subject of this article, the Ball family of the Rochester area, illustrates that dilemma. Members of the family were heavily involved in the industry as suppliers of chalk, although never (so far as we know) directly manufacturing cement themselves, but also had other interests, in particular as civil engineering contractors, that certainly were not closely or at all connected with cement. We hope that readers will indulge us if we take a broad approach, in view of the inherent interest of the topic.
