摘要

With regard to the article on William Moss in IL 119 information on the accident to ex LNWR No. 1858 appears in Journal No 7 of the Midland Railway Society following a query of mine. The accident occurred on 18th October 1877 and took place near Billing Road. The down line between Northampton and Castle Ashby was blocked by a broken down goods train and single line working was enforce on the up line. Due to a misunderstanding an up LNWR ballast train headed by No 1858 was allowed on the same track and collided with a down Midland Railway passenger train (the latter company operated a service from Wellingborough) One wonders what Moss's engine was doing on an LNWR ballast train. Perhaps he had some sort of maintenance contract. The accident was reported in contemporary editions of The Times.
