摘要

Those who know the topography to the east of the A5086 Egremont to Cockermouth road might be surprised to hear that there was at one time a tramway which ran up the steep rise in the distance beyond Winder off what was once the course of the Whitehaven, Cleator, and Egremont Railway, now the Coast to Coast walk. This area was, of course, within the rich hematite iron ore field known as the Whitehaven Mining District and was at its outer limits. The lower ground at Winder had been mined quite early on close to what became the course of the railway by Mr. Augustus Tulk of the Lowca Foundry. His method of conveying iron ore to Whitehaven for shipping, mainly to South Wales, was by horse and cart. Tulk is mentioned by John Bolton in his book Geological Fragments published in 1869 recounting his conversation in 1863 with Mary Hastings keeper of the penny toll bar on Frizington Moor through which the ore laden carts passed. However, the opening of the railway and the demand for Bessemer pig iron encouraged other entrepreneurs to exploit the iron ore reserves of the Whitehaven district as well as erecting a number of blast furnaces mainly along the coast.
