Doubtless the most well aired mystery regarding the identity of locomotives that have worked on the Channel Islands, are those used by the German occupying forces during the last war. These few notes however, concern what is perhaps a more intriguing case and one that on the face of it, should be much easier to solve; this however, has so far not proved to be the case. The first narrow-gauge locomotives known to have been used on the island of Jersey, appear to have been those of the contractor building the 3ft 6in gauge St Aubin's & La Moye Railway on behalf of the St Aubin's & La Moye Railway & Granite Quarries Company Limited. A photograph exists of one of these engines, reproduced here, which have always been assumed to have been built by Black Hawthorn & Company of Gateshead, a fact seemingly confirmed by a study of the photograph. This has long intrigued me and a recent return visit to Jersey on a family holiday rekindled my interest resulting in these notes.
