Seawater desalination is an energy-driven process, primarily becauseof the direct and preponderanteffect of energy consumption onoperating costs.Although both operating and capitalcosts must be considered in order toachieve the lowest overall life-cycle cost,operating costs typically far exceedcapital costs over the life of adesalination plant. Energy consumptionis also directly linked to environmentalimpact because of the greenhouse gasemitted by most available energysources.
