The Texas city of El Paso voted on 10 November 2010 to hire URS Corporation to help them choose which type of solar energy they needed to power part of the 104,000 y Kay Bailey Hutchison desalination plant. The result will be watched with interest, because the future for powering the larger and more energy-hungry membranebased desalination and wastewater-reuse plants still does not look that clear. One problem with solar power is the huge footprint required - 30 acres (12 ha) in the case of El Paso.
