Poor Corporate governance practices led to wine grower, Darren De Bortoli, losing millions of dollars belonging to his family company in a recent high profile corporate collapse. Vittorio De Bortoli arrived in Australia from Italy in 1924 with nothing but hope for the future and a capacity for sheer hard work He made his way to Griffith in southwestern NSW where he worked as a labourer. By 1927 Vittorio had saved enough money to purchase a small mixed fruit farm at Bilbul on the outskirts of Griffith, the site of the company headquarters today. In 1928 there was a grape surplus and unable to sell his grapes, Vittorio decided to make wine for family and friends and the first crush of 15 tonnes of Shiraz grapes marked the beginning of De Bortoli Wines. Vittorio was assisted in the business by his wife, Giuseppina, but the couple could never have imagined their winemaking venture would become the 120 million dollars per annum company it is today.
