Melbourne s Town Hall played host to a who's-who of the international design community as guests from around the world came together to celebrate the winning products in the Standards Australia 2003 Australian Design Awards on 9 May. The gala night belonged to the Betachek G5, a revolutionary diabetes blood glucose recorder, designed by Nielsen Design Associates and BCS Electronics for National Diagnostic Products, which took out the top design industry accolade - the Australian Design Award of the Year. Presenting the Award, the Hon Peter McGauran MP Federal Minister for Science, said: "Australian designers continue to lead the world in the development of innovative products. The 2003 winner of the Australian Design Award of the Year, the Betachek G5, is one such product that is set to add greatly to the quality of life of many people who live with diabetes, both in Australia and overseas.
