You began your professional career at the Bank of Thailand and your expertise in economics and financial matters is widely recognised. You have written much about trade and globalisation, and you are a staunch supporter of free and fair trade. What are the main benefits of the WTO trading system? The benefits are many and they are widespread. On the broadest level, our trading system promotes a rules-based, predictable system of commercial interaction between countries. It greatly reduces the possibility of overtly hostile trade actions, which can lead to other forms of hostility. It also provides an environment which promotes the expansion of trade.
