摘要

The world runs on data. In IT systems much of that data is stored in databases. Data on its own is not of much use. For most purposes, we need information about the data, or metadata, such as that stored in classifications, data descriptions, terminology and in many other forms to make sense of it. Metadata is essential to communication, searching, understanding, agreeing on meaning and interpretation, and to the effective use and operation of information systems based on Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
