摘要

Outcome assessment in hand surgery has traditionally relied largely upon 'objective' clinical measurements, including grip strength, range of motion and sensibility testing. These simple measures may not adequately reflect patient experience. The importance of the patient's assessment of outcome is now well recognized: It has recently been suggested that the 'routine use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) has the potential to help transform healthcare' (Black, 2013).PROMs seek to measure health, and by comparing a patient's health before and after intervention, the outcomes of surgery can be assessed. PROMs were initially developed for use in research, but in recent years they have been used increasingly to assess and compare the outcomes achieved by healthcare providers.
