With the passage of the Farm Bill in February comes a new initiative to fight citrus greening—a guaranteed $125 million for citrus disease research funding during the next five years. The bill also authorizes an additional $125 million in discretionary funding designed to combat the disease—a feat Florida Citrus Mutual can truly be proud of accomplishing.Four years ago, mutual executive vice president and chief executive officer Mike Sparks met with Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., to propose the development of the Federal Citrus Research Trust Fund to secure ongoing funding to help fightcitrus greening, also known as huanglongbing.
