Trying to get young unemployed people into work and provide training and assistance to young people excluded from school are important societal issues for the government. This paper describes research undertaken at a small woodland in Lincolnshire inwhich thirty six young people are being provided with vocational training in a woodland environment and are learning transferable skills and gaining the confidence to obtain employment or attend college. The article explores why the approach being takenat Hill Holt Wood seems to have a beneficial effect on the young trainees, and the contribution made by the woodland itself.
