摘要

In 2002, a severe infestation of the stem-feeding aphid Pterocomma populeum Kalt. was found associated with dieback and mortality of 2-year old poplars on a farm in north Cornwall. Surveys conducted over the following two years showed that the infestation died out naturally during 2003 and 2004, as parasitism increased and the trees became less suitable for the aphid. Tree mortality and dieback were largely restricted to the second season after planting, and mainly affected the Populus x euramericanavarieties 'Gibecq' and 'Gaver'. Total losses amongst these varieties amounted to 1025 trees (7%), although it is argued that other factors related to the site probably pre-disposed the trees to aphid attack, and were partly responsible for the poor performance of the infested trees.
